About the event
Students have all encountered work with probabilities in the past, even if they have not done formal work. Playing games, taking risks, and wondering about the future all involve uncertainties and thus probabilities. We all have an intuitive feel about how likely something is to happen, but there is a more mathematically precise way to calculate just how likely an event is to happen. We will investigate interesting ways to introduce and engage students in probability.
Statistics is an area which will have a great impact on the students when they become adults, whether they use the specific skills here or not. Today’s world is so filled with data, and so many decisions are based on this information, that to become an informed citizen one needs to have a good understanding of statistics.
